Anicent India has given many gifts to human civilization. Ayurveda is one among them. This traditional medical practice came into existence at such a time when almost no organized medical facilities were there. Basically Ayurveda is a system of Indian medicine now practiced all over the world as a complementary system. Ayurvedic practitioners have identified a number of medicinal preparations and surgical procedures for curing various ailments and diseases, not completely curable in other systems. Many of its methods—such as herbs and massage, can be applied along with other systems, too.

World can found the origin of Ayurveda being around 600 BC in India. This treatments are person specific rather than disorder specific using mixes of natural herbs as medicine. It believes in the concept that prevention is better than cure. In Ayurveda, purification and detoxification, dietary changes, body massages and meditation are used to promote health and prevent and treat illness. The medicines of Ayurveda are rapidly gaining acceptance all over the world as they have no side effects.

The selection of BAMS or Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery is through the same All India Entrance Examination as for MBBS. The qualification required for entrance is 10+2 or equivalent with Science subjects. The five and half year under-graduate programs in Ayurveda lead to a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery (B.A.M.S.). The Post-graduate programs are structured into16 branches leading to a Doctorate in Ayurveda. The 16 branches are the Ayurvedic Sidhanta or the Fundamental Principals of Ayurveda, the Ayurved Samhita or the Treatise of Ayurveda, the Rachna Sharira or the Anatomy, the Kriya Sharira or the Physiology, the Dravya Guna Vigyan or the Materia Medica & Pharmacology, the Ras- ShastraBhaishajya Kalpana or the Pharmaceuticals, the Kumar Bharitya or the Paediatrics, the Prasuti Tantra or the Obstetrics & Gynaecology, the Swasth Vrita or the Social of Preventive Medicine, the Kayachikitsa or the Internal Medicine, the Rog Nidan or the Pathology, the Shalya Tantra or the Surgery, the Shalkya Tantra or the Eye & ENT, the Mano Roga or the Psychiatry, and the Panchkarma or the Detoxification of body.

Ayurvedic degree holder can get employments as medical officers/doctors at government and private Ayurvedic hospitals. Some also start their own practice or open own retail shops of Ayurveda medicines. Many find employment as supervisors in ‘Panch Karma’ or Ayurvedic massage or health centres, as tutors in Ayurvedic colleges or do research, conduct workshops, seminars and retreats.

The history of Homoeopathy can be traced as far back as the year 1835 when a Romanian man Dr. John Martin Honigberger visited India. Gradually homeopathy became an integral part of India’s alternative medicine practice. Indian government passed a resolution that each state would give recognition to Homoeopathic medical colleges from 1960. Another resolution passed was that the Government of India should constitute a body to enforce regulations and promote research in homoeopathy. In 1972, the Central Research Institute at Calcutta was established by the Government of India and three regional research institutes were set up at Delhi, Kottayam and Orissa. In this year, the Central Council for research in Homoeopathy also set up.The headquarters of the ‘Central Council for Homoeopath’ was at Ghaziabad in Delhi. Presently, there are 200 units and 10 regional institutes. The Central Council of Homoeopathy along with other recommendations, formed a uniform syllabus for diploma, degree and linked courses (diploma holders of new course and diploma holders of old course). They were called D.H.M.S., B.H.M.S. and B.H.M.S. (graded degree) respectively.

With the time Homeopathy became the third-most popular method of treatment after Allopathy and Ayurveda. In today’s scenario Homeopathic education is one of the best career options. Today, several students opt for the BHMS studies in different Homeopathic medical collegees. There are many Homeopathic top medical colleges spread all over India offering diploma, degree and masters courses in Homeopathy. Most of the Homeopathic medical colleges offer four and half year, full time program. It includes regular lectures and practical. There are regular hospital visits. After completion of Bachelor’s course, there is an internship of one year duration. After completion of internship, the candidate can proceed for the masters course or start his own practice.

The education of Homeopathy in India can be obtained in various institutes. There are several top medical colleges and institutes spread in almost every state of India. Some of the best Homeopathic colleges in India are Dr. Alluramalingaiah Govt. Homeopathic Medical College and Hospital in Andhra Pradesh, Ahmednagar Homeopathic Medical College and Bharati Vidyapeeth’s Homeopathic Medical College in Maharashtra, Co-Operative Homeopathic Medical College and Utkalmani Homeopathic Medical College in Orissa, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University and Nehru Homoeo Medical College & Hospital in Delhi.

History of organized medical colleges is not too new but for over six thousand years, human looked first to nature to heal illness and maintain wellness.
